I love easy stitch patterns that look complicated.

Whether it’s seed stitch, moss stitch or the one I’m teaching you today, the Andalusian stitch, simple stitch patterns are the best. Any stitch pattern with a short repeat and that just uses knits and purls qualifies as simple.

Andalusian Stitch (close up)

The Andalusian stitch looks almost like a waffle weave knit with evenly spaced purl stitches giving you a little bit of texture. It uses a multiple of 2 so any even number of stitches works for this stitch. It also has a short, 4 row repeat that you’ll be able to knit through quickly.

You’re going to learn to loom knit the Andalusian stitch both as a flat panel and in the round. When worked flat this design looks beautiful in blankets, scarves, shawls, and even washcloths. Since most of the stitch pattern is knit stitches, you may want to add a border to keep the sides from curling in. I include instructions below for just the stitch without a border or with a seed stitch border as shown in the pictures. The Andalusian stitch worked in the round makes a beautiful hat, cowl, or cup cozy.

You can work this stitch pattern on any size loom and with any yarn of the appropriate size for the loom. I’m showing it today using 5/8″ large gauge (LG) looms. I used the 48 peg CinDWood Adult Hat Loom and the 24 peg KB Looms Premium Chunky Round Loom for my samples. The yarn is #6 Super Bulky weight Luxe Craft Buttercream Alpaca Solid in color Charcoal.

Abbreviations:

K – knit
P – purl
