How to Weave a Log Cabin Design

How to Weave a Log Cabin Design

Inside: Learn to weave a Log Cabin design on a potholder. Includes row instructions, link to weaving chart and tutorial videos for both right and left handers.

The log cabin is an iconic quilt design and now you can duplicate this pattern on your potholder loom.

This easy weaving pattern uses 2 colors to creates a square of 4×4 blocks with stripes that alternate direction. This design is fun to weave.

I love the classic look of this potholder by itself, but I’m also picturing it used with other squares to make a fun “quilted” trivet2. Since the log cabin design is reversible you can easily use it with many other potholder designs.

This pattern contains written instructions and links to a weaving chart and  fully-captioned tutorial videos showing the entire project for both right and left handed weavers.

NOTES

This design uses two colors on both the warp (vertical) and the weave (horizontal).

You place all the warp loops on the potholder loom first.  Then you weave the horizontal loops according to the row instructions. Pay close attention to the warp setup since it is essential to this design.

In the row instructions below, directions written in parentheses ( ) are repeated.  The number of times to work the repeat are listed after the parentheses.
