Collared Cardigan | Loom

The Collared Cardigan really caught my eye.  It looked like something my mom would love and so we are bringing this to you! Collared Cardigan

The Collared Cardigan is the perfect versatile piece to add polish to a pair of jeans with a t-shirt or white shirt for girls lunch or pair it with your little black dress for a night on the town.

 

Notes:

The pattern is loom knit as 5 separate flat panels and then sewn together.  The length of sleeves and jacket are a crop size (See photo with purple collared cardigan).  See sample in neutral color, modeled by Dawn, for a longer sleeve and length version. Add length as desired.

 

Size:

UK size 10 / 12 (8/10 US or Canada) sample size.

A smaller/larger size can be made by decreasing/increasing the stitch number and rows needed for width and length. Here is a chart for general women’s sizes to help but you may want to measure instead. CLICK

 

Materials:

36 peg round loom (3/4″ XLG Knifty Knitter type used in sample.)

{For larger size use Knitting Board Hat loom or Martha Stewart Loom using ever other peg. Kiss-Looms: Approximately 6 washers on regular and 7 on small gauge}

 

Notions:

Yarn:  

Approximately 600 meters (656 yards) Persia Chunky yarn was used for the sample.  It is a discontinued yarn from the UK and is a Boucle type yarn.

Lionbrand Homespun 5 Bulky yarn would provide a similar gauge. (Approximately 3.5 – 4 balls [185 yds/169m per ball] needed for XS/S size, purchase more for larger size & check dye lots)

 

Gauge:

8 stitches x 12 rows = 4×4; 4 WPI (wraps per inch)

 

Stitches Used: 

Chain cast on

Chain 1 bind off

E-wrap

 

Technique:

Yarn over increase – ewrap 1 peg at each end

 

Abbreviations:

EW:  ewrap

YO: yarn over

 

 Instructions:

Make Back, Front Panels 1 & 2 and 2 sleeves.  Follow construction instructions to sew collared cardigan together.

 

Back Panel

(Size: 19 ins wide and 18.5 ins long )

Cast on: Chain cast on 36 pegs.

Ew 50 rows as a flat panel

Cast off: Chain 1 bind off.

 

Front Panel 1

Cast on:  Chain cast on 26 pegs.

Rows: 1 – 50: ew as a flat panel

Chain 1 bind off until 11 pegs remain.

Rows 51-62: ew as a flat panel

Cast off: Chain 1 bind off remaining pegs.

 

Front Panel 2

Cast on:  Chain cast on 26 pegs in the opposite direction from front panel 2.

Rows: 1 – 50: ew as a flat panel

Chain 1 bind off until 11 pegs remain

Rows 51-62: ew as a flat panel

Cast off: Chain 1 bind off remaining pegs.

 

Sleeves

(The collared cardigan sleeves are cropped in length to 14.5 inches long; check gauge and knit longer before increase as needed. 

For longer sleeve on XS/S version knit 30 rows before increase – see photo of Dawn wearing her collared cardigan with longer sleeves).

Make 2

Cast on: Chain cast on 22 pegs.

Rows 1 – 15: ew as flat panel

YO Increase: 1 peg each end (beginning and end) of row 16 (24 pegs)

Rows 17 – 20: ew as flat panel

YO Increase: 1 peg each end on row 21 (26 pegs)

Rows 22 – 25: ew as flat panel

YO Increase: 1 peg each end on row 26 (28 pegs)

Rows 27– 35: ew as flat panel

YO Increase: 1 peg each end on row 36 (30 pegs)

Rows 37 – 40: ew as flat panel

Cast off: Chain 1 bind off.

 

Construction

Right sides together sew the fronts at the collar (11 pegs)

Right sides together sew fronts to back at shoulder seams.

Ease the collar to fit the back and fronts, sew attach sleeves at shoulder seams, sew arm seam and side seams.

Turn collar and slip stitch in place.

Place & sew buttons on front about 1/4 – 1/3 from the bottom.  The buttons are not functional.
