A Pineapple Hat reminds me of Carmen Miranda or Lucille Ball playing her (the Chiquita banana lady!) having fun or making a mess. Even some today would probably liken it to Spongebob. But really, this Pineapple Hat has been making me hungry for my favorite fruit ever since Kay Weiss and I have been working on this for the knitting loom. YUMMY! All samples and photos are made by Kay. The final pattern and charts are by me. Enjoy!- Kristen
Pineapple Hat
by Kay Weiss & Kristen Mangus
The allure and warmth of the Hawaiian Islands come together in this whimsical Pineapple Hat! Pairs perfectly with a grass skirt or a winter parka. Wear it anytime you find yourself wishing for a tropical escape.
A friend recently requested a hat that looked like a pineapple. New to looming but always up for a challenge, I got to work creating a chart of diamonds and dots. Soon, the Pineapple Hat was born!
Looms:
40 peg 3/4″ XLG gauge (Must be exactly 40 pegs – or multiples of 10 – for main stitch pattern to work).
24 peg 5/8″ RG gauge looms (used for a reduced crown).
Boye Round Looms used in samples.
Yarn:
Color A Yellow; Super Bulky 6. 1 skein of Bernat Softee Chunky Color Glowing Gold was used in sample.
Color B Green; Super Bulky 6 or Bulky 5. Approximately 3 yards of (Bulky 5) Loops and Threads Charisma Color Forest.
Notions:
Knitting pick, Tapestry needle, Crochet hook Size K-10.5 (6.5 mm), scissors
Size:
Fits most adults.
Multiple:
20 sts and 10 rows in the round. (Main “Diamond and Dot” pattern is 10 sts and 10 rows repeat).
Abbreviations:
rep – repeat
bet – between
rem – remaining
st(s) – stitches
ew – e-wrap
bobble – see techniques
k – u-knit used in sample (can use Knit aka reverse purl)
k2tog – knit 2 (stitches) together
Techniques used:
Chain Cast on – use crochet hook
Knit stitch – Use U-knit for all knit stitches
Bobble – Small bobble for “dot”; EW same peg 3 times. Place first EW stitch back on peg and lift bottom over top. This is a reduced bobble.
Provisional Bind-off (Transfer) – use a contrasting scrap yarn to pick up stitches from first loom and move to second loom. Pull out scrap after moved.
Modified Gathered Bind-off – Modified Drawstring bind off (see video)
Crochet or Knit leaves of various sizes and sew onto top of hat in green color.
