Loom Knit Hanging Kitchen Towel

Can’t you just smell it?  The brown-sugar glazed ham baking in the oven, fresh bread and the spicy scent of Grandma’s homemade gingerbread.  There’s nothing like family working together in the kitchen preparing for Christmas dinner.  You just finished peeling the potatoes, rinsed your hands and you naturally reach for the towel hanging on the front of Grandma’s oven door.  It’s there.  You know it’s there because Grandma always hangs a fresh towel out before a visit.  Now you can loom knit your own classic hanging towel like Grandma used to do, but with an updated modern look.  I’ve adapted the The At Your Service Knit Cloth pattern from Yarnspirations into a loom knit hanging kitchen towel that Grandma is sure to love.  Thanks, Yarnspirations, for allowing me to adapt this fantastic needle knit pattern to the loom.

This pattern features a garter stitch border with seed stitch used for the main body of the towel.  The towel is loom knit from the bottom up with a tapered top and button closure.  Made with kitchen-friendly cotton yarn these towels are strong and when you’re done just toss them in the washer.

Let’s get started!

Yarn

Contrast A Bernat Handicrafter Cotton  (1 ball or 80 yds.)

Contrast B Bernat Handicrafter Cotton  (1 ball or 22 yds.)

Loom

3/8″ gauge loom with at least 49 pegs

Supplies

• stitch markers
• tape measure
• scissors
• tapestry needle
• 1 5/8” [1.5 cm] button

Size

Approx 11″ x 12″ [28 x 30.5 cm] (when buttoned).

Gauge

20 sts and 26 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in stocking st.

Let’s get to work on our Loom Knit Hanging Kitchen Towel ….

 CO 49 sts.

Garter Border:
Row 1: P all.
Row 2: K all.
Rep Rows 1-2 two more times.

Row 3  P all.  

Seed Stitch
Row 4: K5. *P1, K1. Rep from * to last 6 sts. P1. K5.
Row 5: P5. *K1, P1. Rep from * to last 6 sts. K1. P5.
Rep last 2 rows until piece measures 8”.

Row 6: K5. K2tog. *P1, K1. Rep from * to last 8 sts. P1. Ssk. K5.
Row 7: P5. K1. *K1, P1. Rep from * to last 7 sts.  K2. P5.
Row 8: K5. K2tog. *K1, P1. Rep from * to last 7 sts. K1. Ssk. K5.
Row 9: P5. K1. *P1, K1. Rep. from * to last 5 sts. P5.
Rep last 4 rows once more. Cut yarn.

Attach Contrast B.
Rep Rows 6 through 9 two more times.

Row 10: K5. K2tog. *P1, K1. Rep from * to last 8 sts. P1. Ssk. K5.
Row 11: P5. Ssk. *P1, K1. Rep from * to last 8 sts. P1. K2tog. P5.
Rep these 2 rows until 13 sts remain.

Hanger:
Row 12: K all.
Row 13: P all.
Rep last 2 rows until hanger measures 4”. (For wide oven door handles you may need to knit to 5″ to get a good fit.)

Row 14: K5, K2tog, YO, K6.
Row 15: P all.
Row 16: K all.
Repeat Rows 15 & 16 once more and purl bind off.

Weave in ends. Sew on button with needle and thread to correspond to buttonhole.
