Eyelets!
Learn to loom knit double knit eyelets with this easy tutorial. Double knitting on a long knitting loom is one of the basics many of us started with when we first picked up a loom. Double knit fabric is thick and warm and doesn’t curl so it’s ideal for scarves and shawls.
But wouldn’t you love to add a touch of lacework to make an eye catching design? This technique lets you add large, open eyelets to your double knit fabric. I’m specifically showing a floral motif, but you can add eyelets in a variety of ways.

I designed the pattern below to give you a small project to try out. The Double Knit Eyelet Square has an eyelet design that creates a flower focal point in a double stockinette background. This pattern makes a square, but you can use this technique to add the eyelet design to any double knit project, like at the end of a scarf.
Pattern includes written instructions, photos, and fully captioned tutorial videos for both left and right handed loom knitters.

NOTES
This square features eyelets in a double stockinette fabric. This technique can be used on any double knit loom gauge and an appropriate weight yarn.
Each row is knit working from the front (lower) board to the back (upper) in double stockinette stitch. Add eyelets by moving stitches. Those stitches are wrapped normally in other rows. (See Instructions for details.)
Peg numbering in this pattern is from left to right.

INSTRUCTIONS
Double Stockinette Cast on:
Cast on 11 pairs of pegs in Double Stockinette stitch pattern (see diagram) using the method below:
- Place slip knot on anchor peg or hold loosely if no anchor peg.
- Wrap yarn around outside of Peg 1 on LOWER board. (Do not Ewrap.)
- Then wrap around outside of Peg 2 on UPPER board.
- Next wrap around Peg 3 on LOWER board.
- Continue wrapping pegs in a zig zag pattern wrapping the ODD pegs on the LOWER board and EVEN pegs on the UPPER board until you reach peg 11 on the LOWER board.
- Guide yarn around back of peg and straight up to Peg 11 on the UPPER board. Wrap the outside of Peg 11.

7. Continue back toward the beginning in a zig zag pattern, wrapping the ODD pegs on the UPPER board and EVEN pegs on the LOWER board until you reach peg 1 on the UPPER board. All 11 peg pairs are wrapped.

8. Lay anchor yarn.

9. Wrap all pegs again following steps 2-7. All pegs now have two loops.

10. Repeat steps 2-7 once more. All pegs now have three loops.

11. Knit the bottom loop over the top 2 loops on all pegs. After knitting all pegs have 2 loops.

TIP: Peg numbers listed in the instructions below are for pairs of pegs. Work the pegs on both the lower and upper boards at the same time. Example: If moving peg 5 to peg 4 you will move lower peg 5 to lower 4 and upper 5 to upper 4.
Floral Eyelet:
Row 1: Knit [Wrap and knit bottom loop over top 2 loops, as detailed above.]
Repeat Row 1 three times.
Row 2: Before wrapping, knit the bottom loop over the top loop on Pegs 5 and 7. Move rem loops from Peg 5 to 4 and from Peg 7 to 6. Wrap loom (including empty pegs) and knit off all pegs* except Pegs 5 and 7. *Pegs 4 and 6 have 4 loops so knit the bottom 2 loops over the top 2 loops.
Row 3: Wrap loom and knit off all pegs except Pegs 5 and 7. All pegs now have 2 loops.
Repeat Row 1 two times.
Row 4: Before wrapping, knit the bottom loop over the top loop on Pegs 4, 6 and 8. Move rem loops from Peg 4 to 3, Peg 6 to 5 and Peg 8 to 7. Wrap loom (including empty pegs) and knit off all pegs* except Pegs 4, 6 and 8*. *Pegs 3, 5 and 7 have 4 loops so knit the bottom 2 loops over the top 2 loops.
Row 5: Wrap loom and knit off all pegs except Pegs 4, 6 and 8. All pegs now have 2 loops.
Repeat Row 1 two times.
Rows 6-7: Rep Rows 2-3.
Repeat Row 1 four times.
Before Bind off, knit off 1 stitch on each peg to leave 1 loop each.

Bind off:
- Using crochet hook, pick up stitch on last peg opposite where the working yarn is. (Ex: If the working yarn is on the upper board at the left, pick up the stitch on the lower board at the right.)
- Pick up stitch from peg on opposite board to complete that pair. You have 2 stitches on your hook.
- Pull the stitch closest to the tip of the hook through the other stitch to bind off.
- Move back to the opposite board and pick up the next stitch in the sequence and pull that stitch through the one on your hook.
- Repeat Step 4 until you have one stitch left on your hook.
- Cut a long yarn tail for sewing and pull through the last stitch.
- Weave in tail.
Finish cast on end:
Now we’re going to create a clean edge at the beginning.
- With your crochet hook, pick up the stitch at the opposite end of the row from the yarn tail. [Note: Make sure you do not pick up any strands of the anchor yarn.]
- Pick up the next stitch. Now you have 2 stitches on your hook.
- Pull the stitch closest to the tip of the hook through the other stitch.
- Repeat Steps 2 & 3 until you have one stitch left.
- Using the crochet hook, pick up the yarn tail and pull it through the last stitch.
- Gently pull the anchor yarn out of your cast on edge.
- Weave in tail.
